This past weekend I went to a place called Blue Elephant, an Asian Fusion restaurant located in Pottstown, PA. I actually stumbled across it on my Facebook feed so I figured why not give it a try?! It just opened a few months ago and is located at the former Brickhouse Restaurant which also used to be a previous bank. From the pictures online it looked super chic on the inside and their menu offered several GF options as well. I wanted so badly to like this place but unfortunately it was just one bad thing after another. I will say that the inside decor is beautiful and very spacious and its has a really nice bar area.
For my appetizer I wanted to start off with the Edamame but they had ran out of it, so the waitress suggested getting the dumplings that could be made GF. The dumplings were steamed with a pork filling, scallions on top and a soy vinaigrette which I’m pretty sure was not GF. My boyfriend went with the High Street sushi roll. The dumplings were pretty good but my boyfriend was not a huge fan of the sushi.
For my second course I ordered the Pad Thai (GF version) which was rice noodles, egg, scallions, peanuts (which I opted not to get), vegetables, tamarind and bean sprouts. The second the dish came out I knew it wasn’t right just by the smell and when I tasted it, it was not good. There was a weird taste that I just couldn’t put my finger on. I made my boyfriend try it who is not a picky eater at all and he agreed it wasn’t good. I told the waitress who was very understanding but did inform me that some people like the Pad Thai and some people don’t and they are still working on the GF version…
By this point I was just so annoyed but still starving at the same time. I asked if they could do the Organic Chicken Teriyaki but they did not have GF Teriyaki sauce so I went with the Sesame Encrusted Tuna with butternut squash puree’, Japanese purple sweet potatoes and cauliflower. This was definitely better than the Pad Thai but I pretty much only ate the vegetables. Sorry I do not have a picture to post of the tuna because honestly I just wanted to be done with the meal. I will say that my boyfriend ordered the Duck Breast Pappardelle which he really enjoyed.
My advice would be if you are GF to probably hold off on going to this restaurant or maybe just wait a little longer since they did just open a few months ago.
