An Oldie But Goody!

Who is ready for some new and improved Sloppy Joe’s? Such an oldie but goody dinner idea that I used to love to eat when I was a kid. I was always excited when I knew my mom was making them for dinner. I remember the can of sauce she used called “Manwich”! It was an already made sauce with tomatoes, onions and bell peppers and all you had to do was add whatever meat you were using. Simple as that and it was done in a few short minutes. Well…since then I have changed my eating habits slightly and I don’t think I will be using the canned Sloppy Joe sauce any longer.

No need to worry though I made my own Sloppy Joe mixture the other night and I couldn’t even taste the difference. Well, actually I’m pretty sure mine tasted noticeably better. The first thing I did was brown the meat (I used ground chicken) and then added onions, green pepper and garlic until soft and then mixed in some tomato paste. Once that was well combined I added ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. I let that cook for about 10-15 minutes until it became a thicker consistency. While the meat mixture was cooking I toasted some buns (GF for me of course) and that quickly dinner was complete! Everyone enjoyed it and even went back for seconds and thirds!
